Throughout the centuries, hats and fascinators have always been at the centre of fashionable attire for the discerning lady and as fashions have changed and adapted to fit into modern life so has the choice of headwear. During the first half of the twentieth century, hats were always worn during the daytime and fascinators were generally worn to accessorise evening dress. Nowadays, hats and fascinators are worn to more formal occasions such as weddings, christening and funerals as well as to days out at horse racing events. Many brides are now opting to wear a fascinator rather than the traditional veil.
Traditionally and following royal etiquette, headwear has always been made tipped or trimmed to the right handside ie next to your right ear! But these days with so many different hairstyles, asymmetric dresses and trims, ladies are opting to position their hats and fascinators to either side.
Hats are traditionally defined as headwear which covers the crown of the head and which often sports a brim. Materials and trim used for making hats can vary considerably depending upon the occasion and season and can include fur, felt, leather, velvet, linen and straw. The process of making a hat involves blocking sinamay or parasisal (straw material) into a set shape for both the crown and the brim. A huge amount of expertise is needed to mould the material into the required shape. Once the crown and brim have been constructed and attached to each other, the trim of bows, feather sprays, flowers, loops, quills, crystal detailing and ribbons can be added to finish the look.
Originally, the term fascinator was used to refer to a fine, lacy head covering similar to a shawl which was made from wool, lace and feathers. However, today, ‘fascinator’ is a general term which relates to any type of hair accessory which is not a formal hat. Fascinators tend to be less formal in their look and allow more versatility with the use of materials. A significant amount of skill is required to combine the components used to make a fascinator effectively.
However, the distinction between a fascinator and a hat has become rather blurred of late and there is much discussion about whether a hat is a fascinator or vice versa.
Whichever term you want to use, there is no disputing our products are simply fabulous!
